6th Grade Academy update for February

Greetings, a few notices and updates from the 6^th grade Academy:

This Friday, February, 24, your children will be bringing home informational flyers, one deals with the West Side Relays that we will be participating in May. More timely, however, is a field trip permission form for our spring concert at the Wells Fargo Center Thursday, March 15.  We need to have these forms back, signed, by Friday, March 9.  I hope you will consider participating as a driver as we depend on parents.  We will be leaving right at 8:35 to make the first concert of the day and beat the last of the commute traffic.

Congratulations go out to our 6^th grade spelling champs from our Academy. The annual Sonoma County Spelling Bee was conducted yesterday and our two representatives placed 3^rd and 12^th in a field of 56! Congratulations to Conrad Smith,  3^rd place and Madison De Bel, 12^th place. Could you spell dissertation at age eleven?

  Thank you for your support and apparent good feedback on the program as we have fifty applications turned in at this date for the coming 2012-13 school year.

updates and new info

Greeting, A few items  of note;

 

We are currently at 45 forty five applications for the coming  2012-13 year and I have received enough interest that we have scheduled one additional parent ed. orientation night for Wednesday,  February 15, 6:30-8:00 pm starting in the Multi Purpose Room at PJHS and culminating with a classroom tour. I will put the notice in the Press Democrat and the Argus Courier but  word of mouth seems to be the best media so please share the word with friends.

 

Many of you currently enrolled parents have asked how we are planning to continue the tech piece in the 7th and 8th grades. I am pleased that we were awarded a grant by the Petaluma Education Foundation for four more Smart boards to be installed this year in the 7th and 8th grade classrooms. This is in addition to the two boards that our Site Council approved last month.  All Petaluma City Schools are fortunate to have an annual tech fund that provides money specifically for technology assisted education. We will be deciding on how to use this for the coming year and the need to perpetual the tech for our 6th graders is a significant  consideration.

 

Yes, we are participating in the West Side Relays and thanks to parent volunteer support,  we are starting to train for that. I will forward the dates to you as soon as they are confirmed. We are also participating in the Sonoma County Spelling Bee for 4th through 6th grades. The actual test is tomorrow, Wednesday with our two top performers going on to the next level of regional competition.

 

I appreciate your response to the Challenge Day request for parent helpers and we are pleased to have sufficient numbers to make it happen. This is our school wide anti-bulling  self-esteem program that has reached every one of our 7th graders each year for the last three years. This program gives us a powerful vocabulary and strategies to use throughout the year to reinforce the principles of self respect and cooperation.

 

Tonight  is the first of our Parent Education Series presented by the PJHS  PTSA. The classes are designed to help provide information, raise questions and foster discussion. The first topic is " Overview of this Generation, Physical Development and Health Concerns (including sleep)

Upcoming topics will cover: Cognitive and Brain Development, Parenting Styles, Moral Development Self image and the role of media and social networks.The classes are presented in the PJHS Library, free, begin at 6:30-8:00 and offer bilingual translation Spanish and  English.

Saludo, unos pocos artículos de nota;
Actualmente estamos en 45 cuarenta y cinco aplicaciones para los próximos años 2012-13 y he recibido suficiente interés que hemos programado un adicional de los padres ed. orientación de la noche de Miércoles, 15 de febrero, 6:30-8:00 pm comenzando en la Sala de uso múltiple en PJHS y que culminó con una visita en el aula. Voy a poner el aviso en el Press Democrat y El Correo de Argus, pero el boca a boca parece ser la mejor los medios de comunicación así que por favor compartir la palabra con los amigos.
Muchos padres de que actualmente inscritos han preguntado cómo estamos pensando en continuar con la pieza de alta tecnología en los grados séptimo y octavo. Me complace que se nos otorgó una beca de la Fundación Educación para el Petaluma cuatro más tarjetas inteligentes que se instalará este año en las aulas de 7mo y 8vo grado. Esto se suma a las dos tablas que nuestro Consejo aprobó el mes pasado. Todas las escuelas de la Ciudad de Petaluma suerte de contar con un fondo anual de tecnología que proporciona el dinero específicamente para la educación la tecnología asistida. Vamos a decidir sobre el uso de este para el próximo año y la necesidad de la constante de alta tecnología para nuestros alumnos de 6to grado es una consideración importante.

Dear Parents

Catching up on 6^th grade academy news.

We had the privilege of a visit last week from Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, who graciously accepted an invitation from one of our students to visit our academy during the congressional winter break. Ms. Woolsey, who is a Petaluma resident, responded to questions prepared by our students. It was a great opportunity for our students to hear from an elected official and someone who has know three U.S. Presidents on a first name basis.

Our enrolment for the coming year is currently up to 43 as we have received a strong response to our December parent orientation. We will have on more community opportunity in February for anyone who missed the first one.

The counselors have been with our students to provide them information about registering for next year. Apparently the majority, about 50 students, will be continuing on to PJHS for the 7^th grade.

We will conduct a parent night to talk with you current parents about next year and also to review our progress thought this first year. Your support and feedback has provided much positive encouragement to sustain and grow the program. Thanks to parent volunteers who are working to coordinate the upcoming west side relays so we can participate.

Our local Petaluma Educational Foundation (PEF) has awarded a fifteen thousand dollar grant to the 7^th grade teachers to purchase four additional interactive Smart Boards. This will enhance the technologically supported curriculum as our 6^th graders continue on to the junior high.

We will be recognizing our students with a certificate next week who earned honor troll status by scoring a 3.0 or higher grade point average on their last semester grade report.

Thanks to all of you who are honoring your Walker Creek payments of fifty dollars a month. We are just about paid in full.

Lastly, please take advantage of the Parent Education Series of free parenting classes offered at PJHS over the next four months. A flyer with this information will be distributed to your children next week.

Estimados padres de familia

 Noticias del 6 º grado de la academia.


Tuvimos el privilegio de una visita la semana pasada de la congresista Lynn Woolsey, quien gentilmente aceptó la invitación de uno de nuestros estudiantes a visitar nuestra academia durante las vacaciones de invierno en el Congreso. La Sra. Woolsey, que es un residente de Petaluma, respondió a las preguntas preparadas por los alumnos. Fue una gran oportunidad para nuestros estudiantes saber de un funcionario electo y alguien que tiene conocer tres presidentes de EE.UU. sobre una base del nombre.
Nuestra matrícula para el próximo año es en la actualidad hasta el 43 como nosotros hemos recibido una respuesta fuerte a nuestra orientación para los padres de diciembre. Tendremos oportunidad en la comunidad más en febrero para cualquier persona que se perdió la primera.
Los consejeros han estado con nuestros alumnos para proporcionar información sobre la inscripción para el próximo año. Al parecer, la mayoría, unos 50 estudiantes, será de continuar con PJHS para el 7 º grado.
Llevaremos a cabo una noche de padres a hablar con ustedes, los padres actuales en el próximo año y también para revisar los progresos considera que el primer año. Su apoyo y la retroalimentación ha dado mucho ánimo positivo para mantener y hacer crecer el programa.

Info re: 2012-13

We had a very energetic and interested group of families show up for our first parent orientation night on Thursday, December 15. Jane Escobedo, PCSD assistant superintendent, was present and gave an overview of the technology aspect of the program and both classroom teachers; Danny Bever and Danna Rocca shared their curriculum and their experiences of the program for the last five months. A good turn out with sixty five people in attendance resulted in eleven applications completed and turned in that night. We will be communicating directly with everybody who attended the meeting and left their email addresses with us. Applications  can be picked up at PJHS main office or can be downloaded from the district web site at   www.petalumacityschools.org.  The deadline for applications is February 24, and March 14, acceptance letters will be sent.

Estuvieron unas familias interesadas para  la orientación escolar el jueves pasado. Jane Escobedo, PCSD asistente del superintendente, estuvo presente y les dio una visión general del aspecto de la tecnología del programa y los profesores; Danny Bever y Danna Rocca compartieron sus planes de estudio y las experiencias del programa durante los últimos cinco meses. A su vez, sesenta y cinco personas presentes en el lugar y once solicitudes completas. Regarding:             Update on the Nutcracker field trip for this Thursday, 12/8/2011

Thanks to all of you who are driving to Sonoma State University, Person Theatre this Thursday, December 8, for the Petaluma Ballet performance of the Nutcracker.

Our drivers are requested to be at the PJHS MPR at 9:50 am, where they will find their name and group of students posted on the west and north walls. Students will be released from class and will meet you there.

All you need do is pick up your students, a map and head out. SSU requests that we park in the north parking lot off

East Redwood Drive

. Person theatre is located on your right when you enter the main entrance to the university off East Cotati Blvd. Individual cars will be required to buy a $2.50 parking ticket at the machines located in the parking lots. I  have attached a map for your review and will have one available on Thursday as well.

Although the performance starts at 11:00 we will be leaving PJHS at 10:00 to allow for adequate time to park and find our seats. We have 73 seats reserved so no need to bring any additional money for admission. We will be returning at 12:30 and eat lunch on site.

En cuanto a: el viaje del "Ballet Nutcracker"  para este Jueves, 12/8/2011


Gracias a todos ustedes que están conduciendo a la Universidad Estatal de Sonoma (SSU) Person Theatre,  este jueves, 8 de diciembre, para la realización de Petaluma Ballet del Nutcracker.

Nuestros conductores deberán estar en el MPR PJHS a las 9:50 am, donde se encuentra su nombre y su grupo de alumnos publicado en el oeste y el norte de las paredes. Los estudiantes se dará a conocer la clase y se encontrará con usted allí.

Todo lo que necesitan  hacer es recoger a sus estudiantes, tomar un mapa y irse.  Podemos estacionarse in el lugar norte del  Redwood Drive. El teatro se encuentra a la derecha cuando entras en la entrada principal de la universidad del East Cotati Blvd.  Estaremos obligados a comprar un boleto de estacionamiento de $ 2.50 en las máquinas ubicadas en las plazas de aparcamiento. He adjuntado un mapa para su conveniencia.

Aunque el ballet comienza a las 11:00 estaremos dejando PJHS a las 10:00 para permitir el tiempo suficiente para estacionarse y encontrar nuestros asientos. Tenemos 73 plazas reservadas por lo que no necesita traer dinero adicional para la admisión. Volveremos a las 12:30 y almorzar en PJHS.

Field Trip update

Thanks to all of you who are driving to the Llano Road Water Treatment Plant Field Trip tomorrow. I have spoken with all the children and they are excited to see the operation first hand. Thank goodness the weather is cooperating as I imagine we had it coming after paying our dues with the rain at Walker Creek!

We will be leaving PJHS at 8:55 am  for our tour that begins at 9:30. We will return to PJHS 11:30 am. 

Parents who are driving, please go directly to the PJHS Multi Purpose Room where your name and group of students will be posted on the west and north walls. Students will be released from class and will meet you there. I have all the forms with me that I will bring in a binder so all you need do is pick up your students, a google map and head out. We will all meet at the Plant on

Llano Road

approximately twenty minutes later.

6th grade updates of events

Greetings,

 

Thanks to you who are making your payments of fifty (50) dollars each month towards the Walker Creek  Outdoor ed  Program. We made $379 dollars at our Cake Walk and Pastry table  at the Pasta Feed and had some fun in the process. Thank you  very much for your contributions, the left overs were used the following  Friday at the dance which was well attended by our 6th graders. The magazine sale also generated a total of five thousand dollars by our 6th grade, 50% of which,  $2,5000 will go towards the 6th grade fund for Walker Creek scholarships.

 

 As an aside I have noticed an overall  calming effect the presence of the 6th graders have had on the school climate. I really think they add  an element of youthful innocence that is welcomed by the 7th and 8th graders who are not too much in rush to grow up. I hadn't expected it but it really has made a positive contribution.

 

We have plans:   Ms. Rocca will be sending home tomorrow, Friday, two field trip pemission forms that we need back asap.  

 

 First we are taking a tour of the Santa Rosa Water Treatment plant on Wednesday, November 30. We will be leaving PJHS at 8:55 am for a 9:30 am tour which will culminate at 11:00 am.  We will return to PJHS by 11:30 am in time for the regular lunch hour. We need parent drivers so please consider participating.  If you already turned in a proof of insurance form for Walker Creek you are good to go. The entire commitment, if you want to go on  the tour as well, and I recommend it, will be from 8:50 am to 11:30 am on Wednesday, November 30. No charge for this trip. I have done it before and the children will be seeing first hand a number of the 6th grade science standards in action.

 

Secondly, we are attending a performance of the Nutcracker performed by the Petaluma City Ballet at Sonoma State University (SSU) on  Thursday December 8. You will need to complete one of the field trip permission slips for this as well. We will need parent drivers so please indicate if you can drive on this date. The SSU donation for this trip is $6.00 dollars and you can return this with your child along with the permission slips.

 

Thirdly,  we are planning a Friendship Feast for Thursday, December 22 at 11:00 am on site. This will be a celebration of everybody's hard work throughout the first semester. It will be a potluck event. We are looking for a few parent  volunteers  to organize this fun event. If you are interested please let us know.  

 

In addition to the field trips you are invited to attend an evening to review the use of the Ipads and the Smart boards on Thursday, November 17 from 6:30-8:00pm in room E-2. After two trimesters of use it will be a good opportunity for you to be brought up to speed on how the technology is being used and to answer any questions you may have. Please consider attending this informative evening.

Gracias a ustedes que están haciendo sus pagos de cincuenta (50) dólares cada mes para el Programa de Walker Creek exterior ed. Hicimos $ 379 dólares en nuestro Cake Walk y una mesa de pastelería en la alimentación de pasta y había un poco de diversión en el proceso. Muchas gracias por sus contribuciones, las sobras se utilizaron el viernes siguiente en el baile a la que asistieron por parte de nuestros alumnos de 6to grado. La venta de revistas también generó un total de cinco mil dólares por nuestro 6 º grado, el 50% de los cuales, $ 2,5000 se dirige hacia el fondo de 6 º grado de becas Walker Creek.

 En un aparte me he dado cuenta un efecto calmante en general la presencia de los alumnos de 6to grado han tenido en el clima escolar. Realmente creo que añadir un elemento de la inocencia juvenil que es bien recibida por los alumnos de séptimo y octavo que no están demasiado apurados por crecer. No me lo esperaba, pero lo que realmente ha hecho una contribución positiva.
Tenemos planes: la Sra. Rocca va a enviar a casa mañana, viernes, dos pemission excursión formas que tenemos que volver lo antes posible.

 En primer lugar estamos dando un recorrido por la planta de Tratamiento de Agua Santa Rosa el miércoles, 30 de noviembre. Vamos a dejar PJHS a las 8:55 am para un recorrido 9:30 de la mañana, que culminará a las 11:00 am. Volveremos a PJHS a las 11:30 am en el tiempo para la hora del almuerzo regular. Necesitamos conductores de los padres así que por favor consideren su participación. Si usted ya se ha convertido en un formulario de prueba de seguro de Walker Creek que son buenos para ir. El compromiso completo, si quieres ir en el tour, así, y lo recomiendo, será de 8:50 am a 11:30 am el miércoles, 30 de noviembre. No se cobra por este viaje.
