Greetings for the Sixth Grade Academy at Petaluma Junior High School 

Our current enrollment is 45 and as of Feruary 22, it is now open to all interested parties from within or beyond the Petaluma City Schools attendance area. If you have already submitted your application, be assured that it has been time stamped and you are guaranteed placement. We will be contacting all applicants with dates for math and English Language reading assessments in March. I encourage all of you, who have not already done so, to come to the PJHS office to pick up a registration packet and elective class selection page so we may begin official enrollment and assignment of elective classes.

 I have included here our latest email going out to our current 12-13 class to give you and indication of the end of year activities and field trips that are typical for the Academy. Thank you for your interest and support. John Lehmann, Principal

The Sixth Grade Academy has a number of exciting events planned to finish out the school year. We need your support to make these adventures happen. Here is a list of events. Please plan to join us in as many as you can.

6th grade enrollment update 2013 and update

Greetings!  We have forty students signed up for the next year from within the Petaluma School District at this time. Enrollment to children outside of the district will be open on a first come, first serve basis, begining on Friday, February 22. Applications may be downloaded from this site or picked up in the front office of PJHS. All applications are time stamped, as they are turned in to the office, to guarentee their order and place in line up to 64.

The Current class of 6th graders will be going on a  field trip to the Sonoma State University and that information is included here for your preview. This is a new field trip this year that will become part of our regular program for the future.  Thanks for reading and being part of our 6th Grade Academy experience.

Greeting Parents and Guardians of the 6^th Grade Academy at PJHS                        

We have been giving a wonderful opportunity to tour the library at Sonoma State University on Friday, March 1st. This is a fabulous resource in our own backyard.  Students will be given a tour of the library and then will be given time to explore the library in small groups.  This is a great time for them to look for resources for their History Day report.

Please watch for the permission slip to come home.  We will need drivers for this trip.  We will leave school at 8:45 Friday, March 1, 2013 and return before lunch.  Students, who might want to photocopy materials they find, as they will not be allowed to check out books, should plan on bringing money.  Copies are 10 cents a page.

Estimados Padres de familia de la Academia del sexto grado en PJHS

Tenemos una oportunidad maravillosa para visitar la biblioteca de la Universidad Estatal de Sonoma, el viernes 1 de marzo. Este es un recurso fabuloso en nuestra propia comunidad local. Se lo dará un recorrido por la biblioteca y luego se le dará tiempo para explorar la biblioteca en grupos pequeñitos de cuatro individuos. Este es un buen momento para ellos buscar recursos para su proyecto del día de historia.

Se lo dará a Uds. el paquete de permiso el fin de la semana que entra. Vamos a necesitar chaperones para este viaje. Vamos a salir de la escuela a las 8:45 y volver antes del almuerzo. Los estudiantes, que quieran fotocopiar materiales que encuentran, ya que no se les permitirá sacar libros, deben  planear traer dinero. Las copias son de 10 centavos por página.

Orientation Night Monday December 17, 6:30 pm

We are planning our 2013-14 Parent Orientation Night for Monday, December 17, 2012 6:30-8:00 pm in the PJHS Multi-Purpose Room. Please join us for an informational evening. We will first meet in the MPR and then finish up in the classrooms for a hands on view of the program. We are excited to share the news of a unique educational opportunity for all children entering the sixth grade:

The Sixth Grade Charter Academy at Petaluma Junior High School

Continuing with our district commitment to provide innovative and rigorous learning opportunities, the sixth grade charter school, established in 2011, focuses on integrated curriculum, elective offerings and technology-assisted learning. Our two highly skilled teachers work in concert to provide meaningful connections between the curriculums with an emphasis on higher-order thinking skills.  Students participate in an A and B block schedule of extended time, allowing for greater focus and depth of study. Each teacher is responsible for the thematic integration of either math and science or English and social studies. The two teachers prepare lessons together to insure high interest, student participation and challenge.  In addition to the integrated core curriculum and a physical education class, students will be able to participate in an elective program and advanced math if assessments indicate sufficient ability.

·        A total of sixty-four students, two classes, will be admitted for the 2013-14 school year.

·        The Charter school is housed on the PJHS campus in two adjoining classrooms, E-2 and E-3, located next to the main office. Both classrooms are fully- equipped science rooms, with wi-fi connectivity, series 800 Interactive Smart Boards, individual I-pads, and their own set of lockers immediately outside.

·        Students will be challenged to maintain excellent attendance, show responsibility and respect to everyone, use technology wisely, and set and achieve goals for their learning and participation.  Parents will be asked to take an active role as well, participating and volunteering their talents to school projects.

·        Application packets will be available upon request beginning December 17 and completed applications are due February 22.  Come join us for a new learning experience!

A program information night for all interested students and parents will be held Monday, December 17, at 6:30 pm in the PJHS multi-purpose room. Please join us to hear about our first successful year and what we have planned for the next.

La Academia Charter Para Sexto Grado en la

Escuela Secundaria Petaluma Junior

Continuando con el cometido de nuestro distrito de proveer oportunidades de aprendizaje  innovativas y rigurosas, la escuela charter para sexto grado, establecida en 2011,  se enfocará en un plan de estudios integrado, ofreciendo materias electivas y aprendizaje con asistencia tecnológica. Dos maestros trabajarán en conjunto para proveer las conexiones necesarias entre los planes de estudios enfatizando en  habilidades de pensamiento/razonamiento avanzados. Los estudiantes participarán de un horario en bloques de tiempo extendido A y B que les permitirá enfocarse en forma mas profunda en sus estudios. Cada maestro será responsable por la integración temática  de tanto sea matemáticas y ciencias, o inglés  y estudios sociales. Los dos maestros prepararán las lecciones juntos para asegurar el alto interés, la participación de los estudiantes y ofrecer un desafío académico.  En adición al plan de estudios integrado y a una clase de educación física, los estudiantes podrán elegir una clase del programa tradicional electivo de  PJHS.

·        Un total de sesenta y cuatro estudiantes, dos clases, serán admitidos para el año escolar  2012-13.  

·        La escuela  Charter esta localizada en el recinto de  PJHS en dos salones de clase adjuntos, E-2 y E-3, localizados cerca de la oficina principal. Los dos salones de clase están totalmente equipados para ciencias, wi-fi conexión, Ipads para todos los alumnos,  y tienen sus propios casilleros afuera e inmediatos a los salones.

·        Se desafiará a los estudiantes a mantener asistencia excelente, mostrar responsabilidad y respeto a los demás, usar tecnología sabiamente, y establecer y lograr metas para el aprendizaje y la participación.  Se pide a los padres que tomen un rol activo también, participando y siendo voluntarios en  proyectos escolares.

·        Los paquetes de solicitud estarán disponibles comenzando el 17 de diciembre y las solicitudes completas deben ser entregadas antes del 22 de febrero. ¡Únase a nosotros para una nueva experiencia de aprendizaje!

Se llevará a cabo una noche informativa sobre el programa  para todos los estudiantes y padres interesados el jueves 17 de diciembre a las  6:30 PM en el salón de usos múltiples de PJHS.

Now that we have closed out the school year for 2011-12 it is time to focus attention to our new beginning at the 6th Grade Academy for this coming fall. Thank you all for completing the registration and elective class sign up sheets. Our counselors are busy finishing up the master schedule and the teachers are preparing their classes. We had a very successful first year and learned a lot to make this year even smoother and more effective. Our first day of school is Wednesday, August 22. however, an orientation will be held on Friday, August 17, to provide class schedules, turn in paperwork,  take school pictures and purchase P.E. clothes. This information will all be available  two weeks prior to the start of school in a packet you will pick up from the school office. We will schedule our Back To School Night for parents the first full week back to school to provide you parents with your student's Ipod, charger, and an overview of it's use at school and home. We had a wonderful promotion ceremony last week in the MPR at PJHS with over two hundred family and friends in attendance. It was the close of a successful and gratifying first year for the Academy. The overwhelming majority of the students are continuing on to 7th grade at PJHS and will experience the advantage of a seamless transition without the normal anxiety that generally accompanies moving on to junior high school.

I look forward to seeing you in the fall and to the start of a new year. Thank you for your support and commitment to your children's learning!

Ahora que hemos cerrado el año escolar para 2011-12 es el momento de poner la atención en nuestro nuevo comienzo en la Academia de 6 º grado para el próximo otoño. Gracias a todos por completar el registro y la clase electiva.  Nuestros consejeros están ocupados terminando el horario y los maestros están preparando sus clases. Tuvimos un primer año muy exitoso y he aprendido mucho para que el año que viene sera  más suave y más eficaz. Nuestro primer día de clases es el miércoles, 22 de agosto. Sin embargo, la orientación se llevará a cabo el viernes, 17 de agosto para proporcionar horarios de clase, entregar los documentos, tomar fotos de la escuela y comprar la ropa para la clase de educacion fisica. Toda esta información estará disponible dos semanas antes del comienzo de clases en un paquete que va a recoger en la oficina de la escuela. Vamos a programar nuestra Noche de Regreso a la Escuela para los padres la primera semana completa de regreso a la escuela para proporcionar a los padres con el iPod de su hijo, el cargador y una visión general de su uso en la escuela y el hogar. Tuvimos una maravillosa ceremonia de promoción de la semana pasada en PJHS con más de 200 familiares y amigos presentes. Fue el cierre de un primer año exitoso y gratificante para la Academia. La gran mayoría de los estudiantes siguen a 7 º grado en PJHS y experimentará la ventaja de una transición sin problemas, sin la ansiedad normal que generalmente acompaña a pasar a la secundaria.

6th Grade Academy update for February

Greetings, a few notices and updates from the 6^th grade Academy:

This Friday, February, 24, your children will be bringing home informational flyers, one deals with the West Side Relays that we will be participating in May. More timely, however, is a field trip permission form for our spring concert at the Wells Fargo Center Thursday, March 15.  We need to have these forms back, signed, by Friday, March 9.  I hope you will consider participating as a driver as we depend on parents.  We will be leaving right at 8:35 to make the first concert of the day and beat the last of the commute traffic.

Congratulations go out to our 6^th grade spelling champs from our Academy. The annual Sonoma County Spelling Bee was conducted yesterday and our two representatives placed 3^rd and 12^th in a field of 56! Congratulations to Conrad Smith,  3^rd place and Madison De Bel, 12^th place. Could you spell dissertation at age eleven?

  Thank you for your support and apparent good feedback on the program as we have fifty applications turned in at this date for the coming 2012-13 school year.

updates and new info

Greeting, A few items  of note;

 

We are currently at 45 forty five applications for the coming  2012-13 year and I have received enough interest that we have scheduled one additional parent ed. orientation night for Wednesday,  February 15, 6:30-8:00 pm starting in the Multi Purpose Room at PJHS and culminating with a classroom tour. I will put the notice in the Press Democrat and the Argus Courier but  word of mouth seems to be the best media so please share the word with friends.

 

Many of you currently enrolled parents have asked how we are planning to continue the tech piece in the 7th and 8th grades. I am pleased that we were awarded a grant by the Petaluma Education Foundation for four more Smart boards to be installed this year in the 7th and 8th grade classrooms. This is in addition to the two boards that our Site Council approved last month.  All Petaluma City Schools are fortunate to have an annual tech fund that provides money specifically for technology assisted education. We will be deciding on how to use this for the coming year and the need to perpetual the tech for our 6th graders is a significant  consideration.

 

Yes, we are participating in the West Side Relays and thanks to parent volunteer support,  we are starting to train for that. I will forward the dates to you as soon as they are confirmed. We are also participating in the Sonoma County Spelling Bee for 4th through 6th grades. The actual test is tomorrow, Wednesday with our two top performers going on to the next level of regional competition.

 

I appreciate your response to the Challenge Day request for parent helpers and we are pleased to have sufficient numbers to make it happen. This is our school wide anti-bulling  self-esteem program that has reached every one of our 7th graders each year for the last three years. This program gives us a powerful vocabulary and strategies to use throughout the year to reinforce the principles of self respect and cooperation.

 

Tonight  is the first of our Parent Education Series presented by the PJHS  PTSA. The classes are designed to help provide information, raise questions and foster discussion. The first topic is " Overview of this Generation, Physical Development and Health Concerns (including sleep)

Upcoming topics will cover: Cognitive and Brain Development, Parenting Styles, Moral Development Self image and the role of media and social networks.The classes are presented in the PJHS Library, free, begin at 6:30-8:00 and offer bilingual translation Spanish and  English.

Saludo, unos pocos artículos de nota;
Actualmente estamos en 45 cuarenta y cinco aplicaciones para los próximos años 2012-13 y he recibido suficiente interés que hemos programado un adicional de los padres ed. orientación de la noche de Miércoles, 15 de febrero, 6:30-8:00 pm comenzando en la Sala de uso múltiple en PJHS y que culminó con una visita en el aula. Voy a poner el aviso en el Press Democrat y El Correo de Argus, pero el boca a boca parece ser la mejor los medios de comunicación así que por favor compartir la palabra con los amigos.
Muchos padres de que actualmente inscritos han preguntado cómo estamos pensando en continuar con la pieza de alta tecnología en los grados séptimo y octavo. Me complace que se nos otorgó una beca de la Fundación Educación para el Petaluma cuatro más tarjetas inteligentes que se instalará este año en las aulas de 7mo y 8vo grado. Esto se suma a las dos tablas que nuestro Consejo aprobó el mes pasado. Todas las escuelas de la Ciudad de Petaluma suerte de contar con un fondo anual de tecnología que proporciona el dinero específicamente para la educación la tecnología asistida. Vamos a decidir sobre el uso de este para el próximo año y la necesidad de la constante de alta tecnología para nuestros alumnos de 6to grado es una consideración importante.

Dear Parents

Catching up on 6^th grade academy news.

We had the privilege of a visit last week from Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, who graciously accepted an invitation from one of our students to visit our academy during the congressional winter break. Ms. Woolsey, who is a Petaluma resident, responded to questions prepared by our students. It was a great opportunity for our students to hear from an elected official and someone who has know three U.S. Presidents on a first name basis.

Our enrolment for the coming year is currently up to 43 as we have received a strong response to our December parent orientation. We will have on more community opportunity in February for anyone who missed the first one.

The counselors have been with our students to provide them information about registering for next year. Apparently the majority, about 50 students, will be continuing on to PJHS for the 7^th grade.

We will conduct a parent night to talk with you current parents about next year and also to review our progress thought this first year. Your support and feedback has provided much positive encouragement to sustain and grow the program. Thanks to parent volunteers who are working to coordinate the upcoming west side relays so we can participate.

Our local Petaluma Educational Foundation (PEF) has awarded a fifteen thousand dollar grant to the 7^th grade teachers to purchase four additional interactive Smart Boards. This will enhance the technologically supported curriculum as our 6^th graders continue on to the junior high.

We will be recognizing our students with a certificate next week who earned honor troll status by scoring a 3.0 or higher grade point average on their last semester grade report.

Thanks to all of you who are honoring your Walker Creek payments of fifty dollars a month. We are just about paid in full.

Lastly, please take advantage of the Parent Education Series of free parenting classes offered at PJHS over the next four months. A flyer with this information will be distributed to your children next week.

 Noticias del 6 º grado de la academia.


Tuvimos el privilegio de una visita la semana pasada de la congresista Lynn Woolsey, quien gentilmente aceptó la invitación de uno de nuestros estudiantes a visitar nuestra academia durante las vacaciones de invierno en el Congreso. La Sra. Woolsey, que es un residente de Petaluma, respondió a las preguntas preparadas por los alumnos. Fue una gran oportunidad para nuestros estudiantes saber de un funcionario electo y alguien que tiene conocer tres presidentes de EE.UU. sobre una base del nombre.
Nuestra matrícula para el próximo año es en la actualidad hasta el 43 como nosotros hemos recibido una respuesta fuerte a nuestra orientación para los padres de diciembre. Tendremos oportunidad en la comunidad más en febrero para cualquier persona que se perdió la primera.
Los consejeros han estado con nuestros alumnos para proporcionar información sobre la inscripción para el próximo año. Al parecer, la mayoría, unos 50 estudiantes, será de continuar con PJHS para el 7 º grado.
Llevaremos a cabo una noche de padres a hablar con ustedes, los padres actuales en el próximo año y también para revisar los progresos considera que el primer año. Su apoyo y la retroalimentación ha dado mucho ánimo positivo para mantener y hacer crecer el programa.
Nuestros locales Petaluma Educational Foundation (PEF) ha concedido una subvención quince mil dólares a los maestros de grado séptimo de adquirir cuatro nuevos Smart Boards interactivos. Esto mejorará el plan de estudios de tecnología apoyados en nuestros estudiantes de sexto pase a la secundaria.
